Wesley started his football career with Cornish club St Austell before signing for Third Division North Gateshead in 1932. Playing as a striker he was there for two seasons before leaving in 1934 for Second Division Bradford Park Avenue after scoring thirty-one goals, including one penalty, in fifty-two League games and one goal in three F.A. Cup ties. He had five seasons at Inside Left for Park Avenue and had scored twenty five goals in one hundred and forty-one League games and two goals in thirteen F.A. Cup matches before World War Two brought an end to Football League fixtures. He made one guest appearance for Leeds United in the 1941-42 Football League Northern Section Second Championship. It was at Outside Right in a 1-6 defeat at The Shay by Halifax Town. He did not play a game in the Football League when it recommenced after the Second World War.
