Thornton’s only League appearance was a disaster. On Boxing Day1925 he let in six goals against Burnley, all of them coming in the first half. He was a noted keeper in the North-East amateur scene, having played for Esh Winning before joining Leeds from Bearpark in May 1925. He left Elland Road for Third Division North Accrington Stanley in 1929, where he made sixty-one League appearances before moving to another Third Division North side in York City in 1931 where he played eleven League games before dropping to Non-League with Bridlington Town in 1933. He then joined Leyland Motors in 1936 and Selby Town in August 1937.
