Stokes started his career with First Division Sheffield Wednesday in 1936, but never made a senior appearance while at Hillsborough. He joined Third Division South Torquay United at the start of the next season, and made thirty League appearances. He moved to Third Division South Southend United in 1937 and made eleven League and one F.A. Cup appearances in two seasons. During the Second World War he played for Leeds United in the 1943-44 Football League Northern Section (First Championship). He made his debut at Left Back in a 1-7 defeat by Sunderland at Roker Park on 28th August 1943. He then missed four games before returning at Left Back for the next two games, as United drew 3-3 with Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park, and beat Gateshead at Elland Road 5-2. He then missed two games before returning to play his final two games for Leeds as they drew 2-2 at home to Doncaster Rovers and lost 1-6 at Bradford Park Avenue He did not play in the Football League after the Second World War. He died in 2000.
