Smith was a product of the Tottenham Youth system and was educated at Leventhorpe School, where he excelled at middle distance running, being District and County champion at 1500 metres. His progess in the Youth Scheme was such that he was selected for the England Under-Sixteen team to play in the 2006-07 Victory Shield Competition and in April 2007 he was in the Under-Sixteen team that played Spain in one of the first games played at the new Wembley. His form in the Spurs Under-Sixteens and Under-Eighteens saw him selected for the club's Reserve side in 2006-07 and he played his first game against Charlton Athletic in March 2007. He signed professional forms for Tottenham on 1st July 2008 and was even taken with the first team as part of the squad to play NEC Nijmegen in Holland and Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Cup in the 2008-09 season. He played eight games for the Reserves in 2008-09 and had scored three goals in twenty-nine appearances for the Under-Eighteen team. He had played three times for England under-Sixteens and three times for the Under-Seventeens before he was loaned out to Wycombe Wanderers on 6th August 2009 to gain some first team experience. He made his Wycombe debut on 8th August 2009 in a 2-3 loss at Charlton Athletic and a week later he made his second appearance in a 0-1 home loss to Leeds United when he was replaced by Stuart Green after seventy-seven minutes. He made his third League appearance in a 1-1 home draw with Southend United three days later but had to come off after Twenty-two minutes to be replaced by Jon-Paul Pittman. He missed the next two League games but he played his final game for Wycombe in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at home to Northampton Town on 1st September 2009. It was while at Wycombe Wanderers that Smith gained his only England Under-Nineteen cap. It came in one of the UEFA Under-Nineteen Group Two Qualifying games played in Slovenia on 14th October 2009 at Sportni Park, Lendava when England defeated Slovakia 2-0. He returned to White Hart Lane on 31st October 2009 and on 20th November 2009 was loaned to Torquay United initially until January but later extended for the rest of the season. He made his debut at Plainmoor in a 0-2 home defeat by Rotherham United on 21st November 2009 and started sixteen League and two F.A. Cup games. In 2010-11 season he was loaned out to AFC Bournemouth from 24th September 2010 until the end of the season. After making his debut for them in a 2-0 home win over Carlisle United at Dean Court on 25th September 2010, he scored his first goal for the club in the final minute to secure a 3-3 draw at Peterborough United on 1st April 2011 and in the loan spell scored just that goal but started thirty-eight games in the League and one and a game as a substitute in the F.A. Cup and made two starts in the League One Play-off Semi-Finals which Bournemouth lost to Huddersfield Town on penalties. The loan was such a success that MK Dons took him on a season long loan the following season and he made his debut for them on 16th August 2011 in a 1-0 win at Yeovil Town. He scored his first goal for them in the seventeenth minute of a 3-1 home win over Rochdale on 5th November 2011 and got a second in the fifty-seventh minute of a 3-0 away win over Leyton Orient on Boxing Day 2011. He had started seventeen League games, three F.A. Cup, one League Cup and one Johnstone's Paint Trophy game before he was recalled by Tottenham on 30th January 2012. Smith played five games for the England Under-Twenty side including all four in the World Cup in Columbia. His debut was as a sixty-second minute substitute for Marvin Sordell in a 1-2 defeat by France at Greenhouse Meadow Stadium, Shrewsbury on 9th February 2011 and the rest were all full games in Columbia in three 0-0 draws with Korea DPR on 29th July at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellin, Argentina, four days later at the same venue and Mexico two days after that at the Jaime Moron Leon Olympic Stadium in Cartagena, while on 10th August he played in a 0-1 loss to Nigeria in the first of the knock-out rounds at the Estadio Centenario in Armenia, Columbia. On 5th September 2011 Smith made his debut, as a forty-sixth minute substitute for Andre Wisdom, for the England Under-Twenty-One team in a 4-1 win over Israel at Oakwell, Barnsley. He was an unused substitute in Reykjavik as England won a Group 8 Qualifier for Euro 2013 on 6th October 2011 and then he played three full games in that Group fixtures. On 10th October 2011 in a 2-1 win over Norway at Marienlyst Stadium in Drammen, on 10th November in a 5-0 win over Iceland at Weston Homes Community Stadium, Colchester and in a 1-2 loss to Belgium at Charles Tondreau Stadium in Mons four days later. On 31st January 2012 he was signed by Leeds United for the rest of the season. The following day Simon Grayson was sacked as Manager of Leeds. He made his Leeds debut on 4th February 2012 in a 3-0 away win at Bristol City. a week later he started against Brighton & Hove Albion in a 1-2 defeat at Elland Road. Three days later he was replaced by Andy O'Brien in the seventy-fourth minute in a 1-2 defeat at Coventry City, after he was injured. The injury meant that he did not play for Leeds again and only made three starts. As soon as he was fit, he was recalled to Tottenham on 27th February as the Spurs right-back Kyle Walker had picked up an injury and cover was needed. On 29th February he was on the bench for the England Under-Twenty-Ones in a 4-0 win over Belgium at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, but he was unused. On 21st April he was called up to the bench for the game at Queens Park Rangers but he was unused. He made his Tottenham debut on 13th May as a substitute in a 2-0 home win over Fulham when he replaced Younes Kaboul after seventy-six minutes. He made his starting debut for Tottenham in the League Cup 3-0 away win at Carlisle United on 26th September 2012. He was then called up for two further games for the England Under-Twenty-One team in the UEFA Championship, with full games in two 1-0 wins over Serbia, the first on 13th October 2012 at Carrow Road and the second four days later at Mladost Stadium in Krusevac, Serbia. On 3rd November 2012 he was loaned out to Millwall for the rest of the season, making his debut for them on the same day when he played a full game in a 4-1 away win at Nottingham Forest. He scored his first and only goal for Millwall on 1st January 2013, when he scored the winning goal in the seventy-fifthy minute of a 2-1 home win over Bristol City. During his time at the Den he took his tally of England Under-Twenty-One caps to ten with appearances in four friendly internationals. He started the game in a 2-0 win against Northern Ireland at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool, on 13th November but gave way to Nathaniel Clyne after sixty minutes. He again started in 4-0 win over Sweden at Bescot Stadium, Walsall on 5th February 2013, when he was replaced by Tom Lees after seventy-five minutes. In the other two games he came on as a seventy-fourth minute substitute for Nathaniel Clyne at Adams Park, High Wycombe on 21st March 2013 in a 3-0 win over Romania, and four days later he was a half-time replacement for Craig Dawson in a 4-0 win over Austria at the Amex Stadium, Brighton. He returned to Tottenham at the end of the season having scored once in twenty-five League appearances, which included one as a substitute and three F.A. Cup appearances, one being as a substitute, while with the Lions. He did make the England Under-Twenty-One squad for the UEFA Finals but had been overtaken by Andre Wisdom as first choice and only took the field once as he made his eleventh and final appearance with a full game on 8th June 2013 in a 1-3 defeat by Norway in Group A at the HaMoshava Stadium, Petah Tikva, Israel, as England dropped out of the competition. Smith joined Derby County on a season-long loan on the 29th July 2013, making his debut at right-back in a 1-0 away win at Oldham Athletic in the First Round of the League Cup on 6th August 2013, but it was not until 31st August that he made his first League appearance, and that was as a half-time substitute for Kieron Freeman as Derby were well beaten 0-3 at home by Burnley. He was taken off in the sixty-first minute of his return to the Den as he was pelted by the home fans as Derby won 5-1 on 14th September. On 22nd October 2013 Derby opted to take Andre Wisdom, who had displaced Smith in the England Under-Twenty-One team, on loan for the rest of the season. Wisdom displaced him in the Derby team and on 30th November 2013 and he returned to Tottenham. While at Pride Park Smith had started seven League games and been a substitute in one other and had started two League Cup games. Even though he had signed a three year contract in the summer, Smith could see no future at Tottenham and after just one substitute appearance in the League and one start in the League Cup at White Hart Lane, on 28th January 2014, Smith joined AFC Bournemouth on a permanent basis on a three-and-a-half year contract. He made his debut for the Cherries in the League Cup in a 2-0 win at Exeter on 12th August 2014 and made his first start in the League in a 1-2 home defeat by Nottingham Forest on 19th August 2014. Unfortunately he could not cement a regular place for the Cherries either, but by the end of January 2015 he had started four League games and come on as a substitute in thirteen more as well as starting two F.A. Cup ties and five League Cup games, but had not scored in any.
