Rhodes joined Third Division North Stockport County in the 1936-37 season but failed to make a first team appearance in their Third Division North Championship team that season. He moved to Third Division South Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic for the next season and scored three times in eight League appearances at Inside Right. He joined Third Division South Torquay United for the 1938-39 season and made seven League appearances at Inside Right. However, part way through that season he was on the move again to Third Division South Cardiff City and he made five League appearances at Outside Right before World War Two brought the Football League fixtures to an end. He guested for Leeds United in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship), making his debut at Right Half on 27th February 1943 in a 1-5 defeat by Bradford City at Elland Road and kept his place for the next two games as United won 3-2 at Elland Road and Ayresome Park against Middlesbrough and three weeks later he was back for the penultimate game of the campaign in a 2-0 win over Bradford Park Avenue at Elland Road. He was back for two games at Right Half in the 1943-44 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) when he featured in the 5-2 win at home and the 4-3 win away at Gateshead in consecutive fixtures in the middle of that campaign. He did not play again in the Football League after the Second World War.
