O’Neil started with his local team Spennymoor United before signing for Second Division Newcastle United in September 1942. He played just one game for Newcastle United in the War years and that was in 1942-43. He played one game as a guest for Leeds United in the 1943-44 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) game at Left Back in a 4-3 away win at Gateshead on 16th October 1943. After the War he did not play a League game for Newcastle United and in April 1948 he moved to Third Division South Newport County where he made nine League appearances in his only season of 1948-49 at Somerton Park before returning to his hometown to finish his career at Spennymoor United. He died in 1978.
