Son of Alvin Martin, the West Ham United and England Centre Half, Martin started his career as a Central Defender with the Tottenham Hotspur Junior team but it was soon decided he was a better prospect as a goalkeeper and also had a spell with his father’s team, West Ham United, before signing for First Division Wimbledon as a goalkeeper on 19th January 2004. He played twice for Wimbledon before they finished bottom of the First Division and were relegated to League One and changed their name to M.K. Dons. He also gained England Youth recognition, making his debut for the England Under-Sixteens against Scotland on 30th November 2001 and adding a further two more caps before his Under-Seventeen debut against Yugoslavia on 13th September 2002. He took his tally to three before he played for the Under-Eighteens against Sweden on 27th April 2004. It proved to be his only cap at that level but after making his Under-Nineteen debut against the Czech Republic on 6th October 2004 he went on to accumulate eleven caps before his final game against France on 29th July 2005. He made fifteen League, three F.A. Cup, one League Cup and four Football League Trophy appearances for M.K. Dons before he was signed by Liverpool on 12th January 2006 for £250,000. He was seen by Liverpool as “one for the future” and he gained one England Under-Twenty cap. He was an unused substitute in the 4-3 League Cup win over Reading at Anfield on 26th October 2006, but otherwise had to be content with a handful of Reserve team games and a few times was the unused substitutefor the first team. He was loaned to League Two Accrington Stanley on 23rd February 2007 andstayed for the rest of the season making ten League appearances. He was on the bench at Anfield on 6th November 2007 as Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 in the ECL and was a member of the Liverpool Reserve team that won the Premier Reserve League Northern Championship in 2007-08. He signed a new two year contract with Liverpool in May 2008. On 4th August 2008 hewas loaned to League One Leicester City for the season and he made twenty-five League, three F.A. Cup and two League Cup appearances as the Foxes became Champions of League One at the end of the 2008-09 season. On 10th October 2009 he went on a month's loan to League One Tranmere Rovers and made three League appearances. On 26th November 2009 he was loaned to League One Leeds United for a month and after not being allowed to participate in the F.A. Cup he was an unused substitute on 1st December 2009, as understudy to Casper Ankergren, a position he was loaned to fill in the absence of the injured Shane Higgs. On 15th December 2009 he played in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy game against Accrington Stanley. He returned to Liverpool on 10th February 2010. He joined Derby County on loan on 12th March 2010 and played two League games, at Doncaster and at home to Middlesbrough, before returning to Liverpool on 12th April 2010. He signed with MK Dons on 12th May 2010 and joined them on 1st July 2010, after his contract with Liverpool had expired. By the end of the 2012-13 season he had started one hundred and twenty League games, thirteen F.A. Cup ties, Eight League Cup ties, three Johnstone's Paint Trophy and four League One play-off games. His brother Joe is a Left Back and started with Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Blackpool and later Gillingham.
