Hick signed for his nearby football club First Division Birmingham City in 1933 but did not play a senior game before moving to Third Division South Bristol City in 1934-35 when he made eleven appearances in his first season there. He went on to make eighty-three League appearances and played five F.A. Cup ties before joining Ipswich Town in 1939. He never played for the Portman Road team as the Second World War brought a temporary end to Football League fixtures. He did, however, play four games in 1939-40 and one more in 1945-46, during the War. It was in the War Years that he played one game as a guest for Leeds United. It came in the 3-2 win in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship) game with Middlesbrough at Elland Road, when he played at Centre Half. He did not play in the Football League after the War. He died at Wrekin in May 2007.
