Gardner served his apprenticeship with United and signed professional forms on 7th August 2007. After extensive appearances with the Reserves Gardner was included in the pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic in the 2007-08 pre-season fixtures. The England Under-Sixteen and Under-Eighteen full-back Gardner made his full debut in a League Cup victory at Macclesfield, a week after signing his first professional contract. on 22nd January 2008 he went on a month’s loan to Farsley Celtic, where he made three appearances before returning to Elland Road. He made his League debut against Gillingham on 3rd May 2008 in the final fixture of the season. He returned to Farsley Celtic for a second spell on 19th September 2008 this time on a month's loan. Although a natural right winger, Gardner also played at right back during his time with United. On 30th January 2009 Gardner's contract was terminated by mutual consent. On 2nd February 2009 he signed for Mansfield Town until the end of the 2008-09 season. He made three starts and three substitute appearances in that time. After the termination of his contract at Elland Road, Gardner signed a permanent deal at Field Mill before the start of the 2009-10 season. The contract was for one year with an option of a further year. By the end of the 2009-10 season he had made seven starts and three games from the bench. He had spent the latter part of the season on loan to Eastwood Town, joining them on 26th February 2010. Mansfield did not extend his contract at the end of the season.
