Coutts played for Saltwell Villa and Ashington before joining Leeds from Dunstan Atlas Villa in the Tyneside League in January 1927. His only League appearance with United was in the 1927-28 promotion season and he moved to Southampton in August 1928. He did not make a first team appearance with the Saints and was transfer listed at the end of the 1928-29 season for £100. He spent ten seasons with Newport, Isle of Wight. Mild mannered off the pitch, he had a quick temper on the field and he was sent off on numerous occasions, once leaving the pitch to punch a spectator. He lived in Botley, near Southampton, until his death in 1968.
