Roberts originally played with Rhyl United and moved to Second Division Leeds City and was at Elland Road in the 1910-11 season with his two brothers, but while Hugh was City’s regular Outside Right, Dickie and his other brother never made the first team. His only game for City came in April 1919 in the final Principal Tournament game of the season at Coventry City, who he joined in 1919 and went on to play eighteen Second Division games for, before returning to finish his football career with Rhyl United.
