Debut: v Stockport County (a): 05-09-1914

Cowen started his career with Spen Black and White and joined City in April 1914 making just two appearances before the onset of WW1. His first appearance was in the second game of the 1914-15 season as City were beaten 1-3 when they travelled to Stockport County as he deputised for John Johnson, who was vitually an ever-present at inside-right. The second appearance of that season occured when he again deputised for inside right, John Johnson in a 2-3 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. While on the books of City for the whole of the War-time period he only managed one appearance, on 6th November 1915 in a 0-3 loss to Bradford City at Valley Parade before being released in 1918 when he rejoined his former club, Non-League Spen Black and White.
