Wright, who captained England Schools seven times, joined Leeds’ groundstaff and turned
professional on his seventeenth birthday in 1962. Capped at Youth level two years later, he
was appointed captain of United’s Central League side and looked certain to make the top
grade. He deputised for Grenville Hair at left back for three consecutive games in April
1963 and he filled in for Paul Reaney once at right back and played his fifth and final game
at left back at home to Cardiff City in February 1964. However, he struggled and left in
June 1964 to play for New York Generals, then coached by former Leeds centre-half Freddie
Goodwin. When the Generals folded he teamed up again with Goodwin at Brighton in January
1969. He started eight League games and came from the bench on two more occasions. He then
had a spell on loan with Hartlepool United in September 1970, but after not being able to
make the first team quit full-time soccer soon afterwards at the age of twenty-five. He
began work as a warehouseman and played for Bradford Park Avenue and Gainsborough Trinity in
the Northern Premier League and also had a spell with Thackley.
