Williams joined Aston Villa from school, turned professional in June 1978, won a League Championship medal in 1980-81 and a European Cup Winners’ medal the following year. He held a fairly regular spot at right back, apart from a loan spell with Walsall which commenced in March 1980 and saw Williams make nine League appearances, but was released when Villa were relegated in 1987 and he joined Leeds for £230,000 in July 1987. His only goals for Villa had been in the League Cup and he had made two hundred and forty League appearances, five of which were from the bench, for Villa without scoring a goal. He took a further nineteen League matches with Leeds before he opened his account against Bradford City. Having broken his duck he went on to score two more goals in the next six games. He left Leeds for Watford in January 1990 on a free transfer and after a season at Vicarage Road, in which he started thirty-nine League games with three more from the bench, he joined Bradford City in December 1991. He stayed at Valley Parade until June 1994 and made eighty-four League starts with one more from the bench and scored six goals. He later played in Hong Kong with Golden and with Garforth Town. He worked for a medical software company at Rawden near Leeds after he retired from football
