Wilkinson started his football career with Medomsley Juniors and signed for First Division Huddersfield Town in May 1942. He guested with Leeds United during the Second World War, playing once at Left Back in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section Second Championship. It was on 13th February 1943 in a 2-2 draw at Elland Road with Bradford Park Avenue. After the Second World War he did not play any League games for Huddersfield Town before moving to Third Division North Hartlepools United in April 1947. He made his debut for the Monkey-Hangers on 12th April 1947 in a 1-0 home win over Stockport County and his last appearance was against the same club at Edgeley Park in a 0-4 defeat on 26th February 1949 in between he had scored five goals in fifty-three League appearances as well as playing three F.A. Cup games. He joined Non-League Stockton and finished his football career there. He died in 2000.
