Waterhouse began with Huddersfield Town as an amateur, joining Leeds in August 1920. He did not play in the Football League for United. However, he played in both FA Cup preliminary ties that season when United fielded understrength teams as the games were played at the same time as the first team was fulfilling Football League commitments at Leicester City and Blackpool respectively.
