Born at Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone, he attended Rush Croft Sports College, where he won the Waltham Forest Cup and the London Cup, before joining the Tottenham Hotspur Academy full-time in 2007-08. He had already earned three England Under-Sixteen caps in 2006-07 and went on to score twice in six appearances for the England Under-Seventeens in 2007-08. He had an impressive 2008-09, scoring five goals in twenty-five appearances for the Tottenham Under-Eighteens, before being loaned out to Yeovil Town on 20th March 2009 for the rest of the season. He made his debut the next day in a 0-0 draw with MK Dons at Huish Park. He and fellow Spurs Academy player, Jon Obika played a big part in helping Yeovil avoid relegation from League One, scoring once, in the fifty-seventh minute of a 2-3 defeat at home to Hartlepool United on 18th April, in ten League starts. His form was so impressive that he was selected for the England Under-Nineteen team in the summer. He was in the squad for the European Under-Nineteen Championship held in Ukraine in 2009, and was involved in three games in the regional qualifiers. On 21st July 2009 he came on as a seventieth minute substitute for Danny Welbeck in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Metalurh Stadium in Donetsk Three days later he was an unused substitute as England drew with the hosts Ukraine 2-2 at the Olimpiyski Stadium Donetsk and three days later he a sixty-fourth minute substitute for Henri Lansbury in the game at the Metalurh Stadium in which England defeated Slovenia 4-1. On 8th September 2009 he made his starting debut for the England Under-Nineteens at the ProStar Stadium Shrewsbury as England defeated Russia 2-1 in a friendly and he played the first half before being replaced by James Wallace at half-time. He played his final three games for the England-Under-Nineteens to bring his total to six in the European Championship, Regional Stage held in the Ukraine for the Final Stages in France in 2010. The first was on 26th May 2010 at Viktor Bannikov Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine, when England beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 and Townsend came on as a sixty-third minute substitute for Thomas Cruise. Three days later at the same venue he was a fifty-seventh minute substitute for Ryan Donaldson as England defeated Bosnia and Herzegovins 4-0. His sixth and final cap came three days later at Special Football Complex Borex, Borodyanka, Ukraine when Egland drew with the hosts Ukraine 1-1 when Townsend was a seventy-sixth minute substitute for Nathan Delfueneso. Those England Under-Nineteen Caps had come after he had been loaned to Leyton Orient for most of the season. On 6th August 2009 he had joined Orient on a one month loan, making his debut in the 2-1 League Cup win at Colchester United on 11th August 2009, in which he gave way to Sean Thornton after one hour. He quickly made his League debut, just four days later in a 1-2 home defeat to Oldham Athletic, when he came on as a sixty-sixth minute substitute for Scott McGleish. He made his starting League debut in a 3-3 draw with his former club Yeovil Town at Huish Park and he celebrated by scoring in the forty-second minute on 22nd August 2009. On 31st August his loan was extended until 31st December 2009. He scored his second Leyton goal on 26th September 2009 when he got the only goal of the game in the game against Millwall at Brisbane Road in the fifty-seventh minute, after coming on to replace Jason Demitriou a minute earlier. He returned to White Hart Lane at the end of his loan having scored twice in seventeen starts and five games from the bench in the League, two starts in the League Cup and one start and one game as a substitute in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. On 14th January 2010 he was loaned to MK Dons until the end of the season. Two days later he made his debut as a substitute in a 5-0 away win at Hartlepool United when he came on as a fifty-ninth minute substitute for Luke Chadwick. He made his starting debut on 23rd January 2010 in a 1-0 home win over Tranmere Rovers and scored his first goal in a 3-1 away win at Stockport County, when he scored in the seventy-fourth minute on 6th February 2010. His second soon followed two games later, when he scored in the eightieth minute of a 3-1 home win over Southend United on 20th February 2010. On 28th February 2010 Townsend was recalled to White Hart Lane after scoring twice in eight starts and one game as a substitute in the League. In the close season Townsend's contract was extended until 2013. After featuring in all three games of Spurs pre-season friendlies in USA and also the friendly against Benfica, on 12th August 2010, Townsend was signed by Roy Keane's Ipswich Town on a season's loan. He made his debut for Ipswich in a 1-1 home draw with Burnley on 14th August 2010, in which he was replaced by Ronan Murray in the seventy-second minute. His second game, a week later, in a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace saw Townsend sent off in the seventy-third minute. He scored his first, and only, goal for Ipswich with a header against Swansea City on 4th December 2010. The loan spell was ended on 13th December 2010 when Harry Redknapp recalled Townsend to White Hart Lane, after it appeared that he was not getting the number of games he expected. He had scored once in eleven starts and two games from the bench in the League and three starts in the League Cup. He played his first competitive game for Tottenham in the Third Round of the F.A. Cup in a 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic on 9th January 2011 when he opened the scoring in the forty-ninth minute and played a full game. On 20th January 2011 he joined Watford on loan for the rest of the season. Two days later he made hos Watford debut in a 2-4 away defeat at Cardiff City in which he was replaced by Matt Whichelow after sixty-five minutes. His second game cane on 2nd February 2011 in a 1-1 home draw with Crystal Palace in which he was again replaced after sixty-five minutes, this time by Daniel Drinkwater. His third and final game was as a substitute on 12th February 2011 in a 1-3 home defeat by Burnley when he came on for Daniel Drinkwater in the seventy-second minute. On 20th February Watford decided that the loan was not working and he returned to White Hart Lane. He had started twice and come on as a substitute once in the League during his stay at Vicarage Road. On 6th March 2011 he was signed on loan until the end of the seson by Millwall and made his debut two days later in a 2-0 home win over Queens Park Rangers. He scored his first goal for Millwall four days later, when he scored the third goal in a 3-0 win at Turf Moor against Burnley in the eighty-seventh minute, before coming off for Scott Barron a minute later. He scored his second goal in a 1-2 defeat at Coventry City on 16th April 2011 when he scored just before half-time. He returned to Tottenham at the end of the season after scoring twice in eleven starts in the League while at Millwall. Townsend played six UEFA Cup games and one League Cup game as he continued in the Tottenham Reserves in the first five months of the 2011-12 season. He was a seventieth minute substitute for Gareth Bale in the 5-0 away win at Hearts on 18th August 2011 and played a full game in the 0-0 draw when the two teams met at White Hart Lane a week later. He played the full game on 15th September when Spurs drew with PAOK Salonika 0-0 in the away leg and then in the Carling League Cup five days later he was a ninety-sixth minute substitute for Giovani Dos Santos in a 0-0 draw at Stoke City, which the home team won 7-6 on penalties after extra-time. On 29th September 2011, he replaced Aaron Lennon just on half-time in a 3-1 home win over Shamrock Rovers in the UEFA Cup. There was a full game in a 0-1 loss to FC Rubin Kazan in Russia on 3rd November 2011 and in the sixth and final UEFA Cup game there was another full game on 15th December 2011 as Spurs beat Shamrock Rovers 4-0 in Dublin. On 22nd December 2011 Spurs extended Townsend's contract until the summer of 2016. Leeds United signed Townsend on 1st January 2012 on loan for the rest of the season. He made his Leeds debut the following day in a 2-1 win at Elland Road against Burnley, in which he played a full game. The tricky Townsend caused the Burnley defenders all kinds of problems and it was from fouls on him that saw several yellow cards and a dismissal. He scored his only Leeds goal in a 3-2 home win over Doncaster Rovers on 18th February 2012 when he got the first Leeds goal in the fifty-fifth minute before he was substituted by Robbie Rogers in the seventy-ninth minute, in what proved to be his final game for Leeds United. Townsend's agent approached United's new Manager, Neil Warnock, and intimated that he had been unable to settle at Leeds. Apparently manoeuvres had taken place after an approach from Birmingham City and so Townsend left Leeds on 23rd February 2012 after scoring once in five starts and one game from the bench in the League and one start in the F.A. Cup. It therefore came as no surprise when on 24th February he signed a loan agreement for the rest of the season with Birmingham City. He made his debut the following day in a 1-2 loss to Nottingham Forest at St Andrew's when he was substituted after eighty-two minutes by Nathan Redmond. He went on to make eleven starts and four substitute appearances in the League and one start in the Play-offs, when he was replaced by Nathan Redmond after sixty-two minutes.
