Thomson was picked up by Leeds as an eighteen-year-old from Loanhead Steelworks in September 1934. He made a scoring debut and looked set for a long run in the first team. However, the purchase of George Ainsley pushed him out of the limelight and he moved to Grimsby Town in February 1939. He had not made a senior appearance for the Mariners before the Second World War broke out. After the War he joined Non-League Worcester City and then Hereford United before moving back north to join York City in November 1948 but did not play a League game with the Minstermen. He died at Haymarket in Edinburgh in 1976.
