Thompson, a left-sided midfielder or full-back, joined Leeds from Lawnswood High School
after playing for Leeds City Boys and West Yorkshire Boys and being a member of the England
Under-Eighteen squad. He turned professional in December 1984, having already made his
first-team debut at centre-half in the penulimate game of the 1983-84 season at Swansea City.
It was almost two seasons before he was next called up for first team duty at left back in
the Christmas fixture with Brighton and Hove Albion in the 1985-86 season. His remaining
League games were in the 1986-87 season, at right midfield and once at left-back. In August
1986 he began a spell on loan at Rochdale, where he made five League appearances, including
two as a substitute, before joining Chesterfield in March 1988 for £10,000. A bad knee
injury saw his League career ended during the 1989-90 season. At Saltergate he scored once
and started eighteen League games and a further two from the bench. He then played for Colne
Dynamoes, Gainsborough Trinity, Alfreton Town and Goole Town. After retiring from football
he became a postman in Leeds.
