Thom began as a seventeen-year-old with Hurlford Thistle and, after unsuccessful trials
with Birmingham City, signed for Nottingham Forest in August 1922. He failed to get into the
first team and was released in the summer of 1923, joining North Eastern League club,
Workington, where he scored thirty goals in his first season. Leeds signed him for £430 in
May 1924. He was given little chance to show what he could do at Elland Road but went on to
enjoy a fair amount of success with other clubs. He was transferred to Third Division South
side Bristol Rovers for £175 in June 1927 where he scored four times in six League
appearances. In August 1928 he returned to Workington, then joined the then Non-League
Aldershot Town in June 1930 and scored nearly one hundred goals for them, including six
goals in fifteen games after they had replaced Thames AFC in the Third Division South in the
1932-33 season. In the 1930-31 season he had scored a staggering sixty-eight goals for them.
He then joined Non-League club Guildford City in the 1933 close season. Later he returned to
Aldershot as Reserve team trainer and was also a gateman at the Recreation Ground. He died
in 1966.
