Taylor started his career with Blackburn Rovers and was a registered player with them at the start of the 1939-40 season. In their previews of the games the local papers refer to him as being a Blackburn Rovers player, but he played several war-time games, he did not make any appearances for the Ewood Park club, either before or after the Second World War. (Information courtesy Neil Roche). He did, however make sixty-two appearances for them in War-time football. He made his debut early in the 1941-42 season and went on to amass thirty appearances that season but that was to be the most games he ever played in a season for the Ewood club as, while he played ten further games for his home club he also played one game for neighbours Burnley and he guested for Leeds United at Right Back in two consecutive games near the end of the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section Second Championship campaign. His debut was on 27th March in a 5-4 win at St James’ Park against Newcastle United and this second and final game was in a 2-0 win over Bradford Park Avenue the following weekend. He never scored a goal for any of the clubs he played for but went on to play eight times more in 1944-45 and twice in 1945-46 for Blackburn.
