William Sturrock, started with Forfar Athltic in the 1933-34 season making a scoring debut
in a 4-1 win over Dundee United on 31st March 1934, but could only manage one game in each of
the next two seasons before he established himself in the 1936-37 season and became a regular
in each of the two ensuing seasons and had made three appearances in 1939-40 before World War
Two cease the League programme. At that point he had scored seventeen goals in ninety-three
starts in the Scottish League and had played three games in the Scottish League, without
scoring. During the Second World War he played in two games for Leeds United in the 1942-43
Football League Northern Section First Championship. He was at Centre Half in the game with
Halifax Town as Leeds drew 1-1 at Elland Road on 5th December 1942. He kept his position for
the next game in a 1-5 defeat at The Shay in the reverse fixture the following week. It is
not thought that Sturrock played professionally in either the Scottish League or the the
Football League on the resumption of competitive football and he was like many other players,
whose best years had been lost to the Second World War.
