Stuart was signed from Dundee in July 1920 for United’s first campaign in the Football League. He played in both FA Cup preliminary ties that season when United fielded understrength teams as the games were played at the same time as the first team was fulfilling Football League commitments at Leicester City and Blackpool respectively. He made his sole League appearance at left half on the same day as Ernie Hart made his debut at centre-half, at home to Stockport County on 19th February 1921. After one season he returned to Scotland signing for Dundee United on 2nd September 1921. He made his debut the following day in a 2-0 home win over East Stirlingshire. He scored his first goal for his new team on 12th November 1921 in a 1-2 home loss to Arbroath. He scored six goals in twenty-six games in the 1921-22 season. He died in Dundee in 1989.
