Stewart was a product of the Manchester United Academy and represented England at Youth level. He had already represented England at the Under Seventeen level, and was selected four times for the squad, after making his debut in a 6-1 win over Northern Ireland at Griffin Park on 29th August 2007 in which he scored one of England's goals, two days later he was an unused substitute in a 1-1 draw with Turkey and scoring before making way for Nicky Ajose in a 3-0 win over Italy two days later. He was also selected for the UEFA Under-Seventeen Championship qualifiers played in Tallin, Estonia, but he remained on the bench in the 6-0 win over Malta at the Kadriorg Stadium on 21st October 2007 then starting in the 6-0 win over hosts Estonia, at the A. Le Coq Arena, two days later and returning to the bench for the 0-0 draw with Portugal at the Kadriorg Stadium on 26th October 2007. Because his parents were from Glasgow, he has dual Scottish and English eligibility and was asked to join the Scotland Under-Seventeen squad by coach Archie Gemmell, but he remained with the England squad. Gemmell had been impressed by his performances in the Old Trafford Academy side which he had broken into in 2006 and in 2008-09, he scored once in twenty-five appearances for them together with sixteen appearances in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reserve team, for whom he played in the winning finals of the Manchester Senior Cup and the Lancashire Senior Cup. He particularly shone in the 5-0 triumph over Bury in the Lancashire Senior Cup, as he scored one and set up two more. After signing professional in July 2009, he continued to make progress in the 2009-10 season, making eight reserve appearances and being called up to the bench for the first-team in the European Champions League tie at Wolfsberg on 8th December 2009, but was not used. His England career continued to flourish and he made his debut for the England Under-Nineteens on 8th September 2009 as a substitute for Sanchez Watt at the ProStar Stadium at Shrewsbury in a 2-1 win over Russia. He went on to gain four more caps, three of them in Group Two of the UEFA Under-Nineteen Championship First Qualifying Round in Slovenia, where on 9th October 2009 at the Fazanerija City Stadium, Murska Sobota as a fifty-fourth minute substitute for Ryan Mason in a 3-1 win over Finland then two days later, at the same venue, he replaced Nathan Delfouneso in the sixty-eighth minute as England defeated the host nation also by 3-1 and three days later he played a full game in the 2-0 win over Slovakia at the Lendava Sports Park. On 17 November 2009, he played his fifth and final game in a 3-1 win over Turkey in a friendly international at Glanford Park, Scunthorpe when he started but was later replaced by Ryan Mason. He was loaned to League One side Yeovil Town for six months on 30th July 2010, making his debut as a seventy-seventh minute substitute in a 2-1 home win over Leyton Orient on 7th August 2010, before making his run-on debut at Bristol Rovers, a week later. While at Huish Park he started one and came off the bench four times in the League and started one game in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, but he did not get the amount of games that his parent club expected and he returned to Old Trafford premamaturely after playing his last game for Yeovil as a seventy-eighth minute substitute at home to Southampton on 28th September 2010. On 25th November 2010 he was loaned to Hull City, initially for one month, but this was quickly extended to the end of the season as he impressed with fine performances for the Tigers. He had made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on 27th November 2010 and he had started ten League and one F.A. Cup match before Hull decided to buy him permanently on 31st January 2011, when he signed a three year contract for a fee thought to be approximately £300,000. He gained his only England Under-Twenty cap when he started the game against France in a 1-2 defeat at Greenhous Meadow, Shrewsbury on 9th February 2011, but was later replaced by Jason Lowe. Just ten days later, just before the end of a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town, he badly injured his cruciate knee ligament which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He did not play again until 19th November 2011 when he started in a 2-0 win over Derby County at Pride Park and in the twenty-third minute he scored his first League goal, when he scored the Tigers' second goal before being substituted in the sixty-third minute. He went on to make twenty-six starts and came off the bench five times in League games without adding to that goal, but did score once in his only start in the F.A. Cup in a 3-1 home win over Ipswich Town on 7th January 2012. His form was so good that Leicester City immediately after that game made a £1.5 million bid for him, which Manager Nick Barmby rejected. The arrival of Steve Bruce as Hull's Manager, saw Stewart's chances become limited and he was loaned out to Burnley until January, when Burnley had the option to buy him. He had started two League Cup and one League game for Hull before making his debut for Burnley in a 1-3 home defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion on 1st September 2012, but after initially impressing the Burnley Manager, Eddie Howe, his replacement, Sean Dyche did not play him, and his final game was in a 0-4 defeat at Cardiff City on 27th October 2012, by which time he had started two and come off the bench in another seven without scoring and he returned to Hull on 1st January 2013. He went straight into the Tigers' team for the F.A. Cup tie with Leyton Orient on 5th January 2013 and made two subsequent appearances as a substitute in that competition and another game from the bench in the League, before being sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers on 1st March for the reat of the season. He made his debut as an half-time substitute for David Bentley on 2nd March 2013 and went on to start three and come off the bench four times in League games in his short stay at Ewood Park. At the end of the season Hull had gained promotion to the EPL and he was strongly linked with a move to Celtic, but nothing materialised. However, after having started just one League Cup match for the Tigers, on 2nd September 2013, he was loaned to Charlton Athletic until the end of the calendar year. He made a scoring debut for the Addicks, with a goal in the seventy-ninth minute afyer coming on as a sixty-eighth minute substitute for Richard Wood in a 1-2 defeat by Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on 17th September 2013. He went on to score a goal on the stroke of half time in the home loss to Leeds United on 9th November 2013 and the opening goal in the thirty-seventh minute of a 2-2 draw at Yeovil Town on 7th December 2013, as he scored three goals in fifteen starts and three games from the bench in his impressive stay at the Valley. There was much interest in signing Stewart upon his return to Hull, with several clubs, Charlton Athletic, Leicester City, Ipswich Town all thought to be vying for his signature, but it was Brian McDermott and Leeds United that won the race and agreed a three year contract on 9th January 2014. However, because Stewart had already played for both Hull and Charlton in the present season he was forced to join Leeds on an initial ninety-three day loan, at the end of which they could take him on the three year deal. Two days later he made his Leeds United debut after having scored once in thirty-one starts and six games as a substitute in the League, scored once in two starts and two games from the bench in the F.A. Cup and had also made three starts in the League Cup, without scoring, since signing permanently for the Tigers. after nine starts and two games from the bench in the League at Elland Road, with Leeds now under new ownership, the new owners decided not to proceed with the purchase and he became a free agent. On 1st July 2014 he joined Ipswich Town on a three year contract. On 2nd August 2014 Stewart broke his jaw in a pre-season friendly with Leyton Orient which saw him miss the first six weeks of the season. His only games in the 2014-15 season have been two substitute appearances in the F.A. Cup against Southampton, coming on in the sixty-second minute on the 4th January 2015 and with eight minutes remaining in the replay ten days later. He joined Barnsley on a loan to the end of the season and made his in a 1-1 draw at Oakwell on 21st March 2015. He played seventy -three minutes before being replaced by Dale Jennings. He started three League games and came off the bench once during the loan period and returned to Portman Road on 30th April 2015. In the close season Manager, Mick McCarthy, said "He’s got to get his nose down and see if he can get in the team, see if he can get in the squad first” and omitted him from the ywenty-two man squad to tour Ireland.- which seemed to indicate that he could be off-loaded before the start of the season as he was included in the Under-Twenty-One squad in a local friendly.
