Saxton played regularly in the "Thirties" and "Forties" for Yorkshire Amateurs. He also
guested for Corinthian Casuals on two overseas tours. He played strictly as an Amateur, but
was offered professional terms with Everton during the 1930s, but, as he was the sole
breadwinner in his household, after the death of his father, he did not sign professionally.
He did play against Leeds in peace-time. In 1935 he represented the Leeds and District F.A.,
when he played for them against United in a celebration match to mark the "Silver Jubilee"
of the King and Queen in 1935 and all the participating players received commemorative
silver ashtrays. He played the one game for Leeds United in the 1939-40 Football League
North-East Division. He played at Outside Left on 8th June 1940 in the final game of the
season in a 1-3 defeat by Newcastle United at Elland Road. He also played for Hartlepool
United as a Wartime guest, playing twice for them in the 1944-45 season. He played in Army
representative football and the photograph shows him playing for his Batallion team. It is
not thought that Saxton played professionally in the Football League. I thank Albert's son
Andrew for his help and the supplying of his photo and facts. "Played for Yorkshire Amateurs
in 1935-36 and up to the outbreak of war. He played once for Leeds United in 1939-40 and
twice for Hartlepool United in 1944-45. He had a number of selections for the West Riding of
Yorkshire County FA representative teams. He continued with Yorkshire Amateurs after the
war and was selected for an FA XI v Universities Athletic Union at Darlington in March 1946.
He moved to Leeds UYMI in January 1948." (Many thanks to Neil Roche for this further
information). He did not play League football after the Second World War.
