Potts was noted for his strong tackling during a lengthy career with Ashington before he
was sold for £50 to Second Division Hull City in March 1912, where he made five appearances
in two years. In the summer of 1914 he went to Third Division Portsmouth but the war
prevented him from making much progress with Pompey. He made just five appearances in the
1920-21 season and again moved on. He joined Second Division Leeds in June 1921 but found it
difficult to dislodge Jimmy Frew. He managed one game in the 1921-22 season and nine in
1922-23, mostly when Jimmy Frew was not available and once when Bert Duffield was injured.
His first team appearances were very limited and he moved to Third Division North Chesterfield
in June 1923. He was an ever-present in his first season with the Spirites but only managed
eleven appearances in the following season to finish with fifty-three League appearances and
three more in the F.A. Cup, before moving to Bradford Park Avenue in 1925. He made thirty-eight
appearances for Avenue before retiring in the 1926-27 season.
