Thomas Christiansen called him into the first team squad for two consecutive fixtures in a 0-0 draw at Hull City on 30th January 2018 and then in the 1-4 home defeat by Cardiff City on 3rd February 2018. After Christiansen had departed his successor also showed his faith by calling him to the bench from the 2-2 draw in an away trip to Reading on 10th March 2018 and followed this one week later by his first team debut in a 1-2 home defeat by Sheffield Wednesday. He almost played a full game a week later in a 1-2 loss to Norwich City at Carrow Road, but he gave way seven minutes from time to Pierre-Michel Lasogga, as once more United chased the game late on. He played a full game in the final game on 6th May as United beat Queens Park Rangers at Elland Road.
