After starting with Barnsley Main Colliery Welfare, Normanton signed for his hometown
team, Second Division Barnsley, in September 1945. "Normanton came to Leeds as trialist
from Barnsley Main Colliery, playing one game for Leeds United Reserves in February 1945."
(Information kindly supplied by Neil Roche). As an eighteen year old he had guested for
Leeds United in the 1944-45 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship) making
his debut at Centre Forward on 2nd April 1945 in a 0-2 defeat by Chesterfield at Elland
Road and five games later he was again at Centre Forward in a 0-6 drubbing at Sheffield
United. He played most of his career at Wing Half making one hundred and twenty-three
League appearances and scoring twice as well as playing seven F.A. Cup ties before leaving
for Third Division North Halifax Town in July 1954. He stayed at the Shay for just one
season making thirteen League appearances before finishing his football career with
Non-League Grimethorpe Athletic. He died in 1995.
