Little is known about Arthur Murgatroyd, other than he came from Whitkirk. It is believed that he was on the books of Leeds United during the Second World War. He first played for Leeds in the final three games of the 1939-40 Regional League North-East Division making his debut on 25th May 1940 at Right Back in a 2-3 defeat by Halifax Town at The Shay and then played at Left Back in the other two games. He played three more games for United and they came at Left Back in the first three games of the 1941-42 Football League Northern Section (First Championship). "Local amateur who played with Whitkirk FC. Played a few Yorkshire League games for Leeds United in the 1938-39 season. He was said to have been born in Australia of British parents. He attended and played for Ingram Road School and represented the Leeds City Schools and later played with New Wortley St John's and Outwood Stormcocks. He died in Leeds in the second quarter of 2004." (Information kindly supplied by Neil Roche). It is not thought that Murgatroyd played professionally in the Football League.
