"As a schoolboy in Doncaster he represented the Yorkshire Boys and was an England trialist in 1931-32 and 1932-33. He joined Shepherd's Road Club in Bentley and District League at the age of sixteen. In 1936, at the age of sixteen and a half, he signed as an Amateur for Hull City." (Thanks to Neil Roche for the foregoing information). He signed professional forms for the Third Division North Hull City in October 1938. He had played fifteen games in the 1938-39 season, when the Football League fixtures were cancelled the following season after he had also played twice in the aborted 1939-40 season. He guested for Leeds United during the War but only played one game for them, at Centre Half on 17th May 1941 in the final game of the 1940-41 North Regional League 2-3 defeat at Ayresome Park against Middlesbrough. During the War he also played twenty-one games for Hull City in 1939-40 and a further twenty-four in 1940-41 before they ceased playong after Anlaby Road had been bombed. He later played for his home town club, Doncaster Rovers for two games in 1940-41 and five games in 1941-42. He returned to Hull City after the War and played one hundred and thirty-one League games, including forty as the Tigers gained promotion to the Second Division as Champions of the Third Division North in 1948-49 to bring his total League games for the Tigers to one hundred and forty-six and he also played fifteen F.A. Cup games after the War. He retired after injury at the end of the 1951-522 season. He died in 1987.
