McInnes started Glasgow University and Ardeer Recreation before turning professional with
Scottish club Third Lanark in the summer of 1935. He stayed with them for almost three
seasons, scoring seven League goals in one hundred and three games, before signing for First
Division Liverpool for £5,500 in March 1938. He scored after sixty minutes on his debut at
Griffin Park against Brentford in a 3-1 win on 19th March 1938. He had scored twice, his
second goal coming in the first game of the aborted 1939-40 season 1-2 loss at Sheffield
United on 26th August 1939, before the onset of World War Two. His final game was in the 1-0
win over Chelsea at Anfield in the third and final game of the aborted 1939-40 season. He
made forty-eight League appearances and had made three F.A. Cup appearances, before World
War Two caused the Football League fixtures tobe suspended for the duration of the War. He
did play thirty-six times for the Anfield club during the War Years and scored once in the
1939-40 season, appearing fourteen times in the 1939-40 season, five times in the 1941-42
season, three in 1942-43, eight in 1944-45 and six in 1945-46. He also guested for Brighton
and Hove Albion, five times in 1940-41, five in 1941-42, five again in 1942-43 and fourteen
times in 1943-44. In 1941-42 he played once for Newcastle United, and twice for York City.
In 1942-43 he had four games with Fulham, two with Luton Town, two with Millwall and one
with Queens Park Rangers, as well as Leeds United. In 1943-44 he turned out twice for
Manchester United and also went over to Belfast where he played for Distillery. He played
for Leeds in the first three games of the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section
(First Championship), making his debut at Left Half in the 0-1 defeat by Middlesbrough at
Elland Road on 29th August 1942. He was at Right Half in the 0-2 reverse fixture loss to
Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park and in the 1-3 loss at Gateshead in his third and final game.
McInnes never played in a competitive match for Liverpool again, after his spell with them
in the war,although he did make the team for a number of games in the hastily-arranged
Western Division of the Football League. McInnes joined Liverpool's administrative staff
after he retired in 1946. He was Liverpool's Secretary from 1955 until he died on 5th May
1965.
