Joined Scottish First Division side, Kilmarnock, from Parkhead Juniors in 1935 after
appearing for them at Centre-Half in a 1-5 defeat by Glasgow Perthshire on 10th June 1935.
He established himself in the Killies first team in the 1935-36 season when he made eleven
appearances before completing twenty-five appearances in each of the next two seasons. He
had made sixty-one Scottish League First Division appearances before he was loaned to
newly-promoted to the First Division, Albion Rovers, in the 1938-39 season where he made
twenty-two appearances. There is little trace of his war-time career he did play for three
English clubs in that time. He guested for Leeds United in three games in the 1941-42
Football League Northern Section (Second Championship). Normally a Centre-Half, due to
emergency circumstances, he made his debut at Right Back in the home game with Blackburn
Rovers on 28th February 1942, when United went down 0-1. He was at Right Back in a 3-2 win
over Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park in the last but two game of that campaign and his final
appearance came in the last game of that campaign in his preferred role at Centre Half as
Middlesbrough gained revenge with a 1-2 win at Elland Road. Before playing with Leeds he
had guested with Norwich City, playing three games in 1940-41 and a further five in the
1941-42 season, when he also had one game for Millwall. After the War he returned to
Kilmarnock, who suffered relegation to the Scottish "B" Division, in his final season with
them of 1946-47, when he played five more League games to bring his total to sixty-six. He
returned to Albion Rovers, in 1946, after they too had suffered relegation to the Scottish
"B" Division after the League was reconstructed for the 1946-47 season, and there he played
forty-four times in two seasons before, after finishing runners-up in 1947-48 they were
promoted back to the top flight.
