Martin began with Parkhouse Colliery before joining Chesterfield in October 1958, but played mainly in their juniors apart from two League games with the first eleven, making his debut for them in a 2-3 defeat by Halifax Town at the Shay on 20th December 1958, before going to Leeds on a free-transfer in May 1960. His one senior appearance for Leeds was against his old club Chesterfield in a League Cup game when he filled in for Colin Grainger. He went to Darlington in July 1961 and broke into the first team, scoring six times in twenty League games. He established himself with Carlisle United after moving there in May 1962, scoring twice in fifteen games in his six month stay. He moved on to Workington at a fee of £3,000 in December 1962, where he scored twenty-four goals in one hundred and forty-four League games in almost four years, before a fee of £7,000 took him to Grimsby Town in November 1966. At Blundell Park he scored five times in seventy-one League appearances before returning to his first club Chesterfield for £3,000 in July 1968. He won a Fourth Division Championship medal with the Spireites in 1969-70 and scored four goals in forty-three League matches before retiring in June 1970.
