Lowry started his football career with ECU Joondalup in Perth, Western Australia, and was signed by Aston Villa in February 2005 and is adept in either the Central defensive or Left-Back position. He forced his way into the Villa Reserves towards the end of the 2006-07 season, making nine appearances and was part of the Villa squad that won the HKFC Philips Lighting International Soccer Sevens in May 2007. He was signed on a one year contract in June 2007. He was given a chance in the Villa first-team when he came on as a seventy-ninth minute substitute for future Leeds loanee Stephen O'Halloran in a pre-season friendly against Stoke City. He was part of the Villa Squad that won the Peace Cup by beating Juventus after a penalty shoot-out. He was one of the designated penalty-takers and duly placed his shot out of the reach of Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon. Lowry made his professional debut in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League in an away fixture at Rapid Vienna, where he came on as an eightieth minute substitute. He also figured in the return home leg as an eighty-third minute substitute. On 17th September 2009, Lowry signed a three month loan deal with CCCL side Plymouth Argyle, making his debut in the run-on side at Newcastle United two days later. He started thirteen League games at Home Park before playing his final game for Argyle on 19th December 2009 in a 0-1 home loss to Coventry City before returning to Villa Park at the end of his loan period. He was brought on as an eighty-sixth minute substitute for Villa in their 4th Round F.A. Cup home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion on 23rd January 2010. He was then loaned to Leeds United on 28th January 2010 and originally the loan period was supposed to be until 13th March 2010. He made his debut for Leeds at Left-Back against Colchester United, two days later and, after an impressive debut, Lowry suffered a minor injury and was replaced by Bradley Johnson after seventy-one minutes. Ineligibility saw him miss the F.A. Cup 4th Round Replay against Tottenham Hotspur but he returned to the starting line-up against Hartlepool United on 6th February 2010. Three days later he was in the starting line-up once more as Leeds travelled to Carlisle United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area Final Second Leg. Unfortunately Leeds were beaten in a penalty shoot-out and it was Lowry's sad lot to be the person to miss the vital last penalty. He started the subsequent games at Leyton Orient, at home to Walsall, Brighton & Hove Albion and Oldham Athletic, and the away trip to Huddersfield Town, but Lowry picked up an injury and had to drop out of the team for the match against Brentford and he returned to Aston Villa as his loan spell had ended. On 25th March 2010 Lowry re-signed for Leeds for a second loan spell, this time until the end of the season. He started at left back in the vital match at the top of the table at Norwich City just two days later, as Leeds went down 1-0 in injury time. He had been played mostly out of position at Left-Back and as Leeds struggled through a form slump he was omitted after Leeds were beaten 3-0 at home by Swindon Town on 3rd April 2010. He did not return to the starting eleven until another vital clash with Charlton Athletic at the Valley. United lost that game 1-0, but his season finished on a high note, as although he was replaced by Jonathan Howson after fifty-four minutes, the game ended on a high as Leeds were promoted in second place after beating Bristol Rovers to secure promotion to the CCCL. On his return to Villa Park he signed a new two year extension to his contract and was notified of his inclusion in Australia's preliminary thirty-man Squad for the 2010 World Cup. Due to Irish parentage Lowry had played six games for the Republic of Ireland at Under-Seventeen and twice for the Under-Twenty-One team, but on 11th September 2009 he had decided his International future lay with his country of birth. On 10th October 2009 he was included in the Australian Squad for the International with the Netherlands in Sydney and then for the Asian Cup Qualifier against Oman in Melbourne on 14th October 2009. He has still to feature in the full Australian team and did not make the final twenty-three for the 2010 World Cup. He was captain of the Aston Villa Reserves and sat several times on the bench for the first team, including Manchester United, but he was happy to get game time. So, on 14th January 2011 Lowry joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season. He started seventeen League matches at Bramall Lane, but was not able to prevent the Blades from being relegated to League One. On 24th November 2011 he was loaned to Millwall and started nine League games before he signed permanently for the Lions on 27th January 2012. He had made one substitute appearance in the F.A. Cup and two substitute appearances in European competitions. He signed a two and a half year contract and after signing permanently at the New Den he had scored once in thirteen starts in the League and also made one start in the F.A. Cup.
