Maurice Lawn was on the books of Leeds United in the Second World War and was a product of Ingram Road School. He played with Whitehall Printeries in the 1940 Leeds Cup Final. He only played three games for Leeds United, all at Centre Forward. He made his debut on 13th May 1943 in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship) 3-2 away win at Middlesbrough and scored on debut. He also played in the next fixture the following weekend when Leeds went down 1-3 to Newcastle United at Elland Road. His final game was in the third game of the 1943-44 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) at Elland Road in a 1-5 defeat by Bradford City. He joined the Army and served in the Reconnaissance Corps, R.A.C. with Fifteenth (Scottish) Regiment. He was wounded by Machine-gun fire during the invasion of France on 2nd August 1944 and was on a Hospital ship when it was sunk. He drowned on 7th August 1944. He is buried at Bayeux Cemetary in Normandy, France. He was only twenty when he died. " He was a Local Junior and former Ingram Road School and Leeds City Schools player, who then represented the West Riding County FA Shools and played for the Leeds and District FA Minor XI. He was said to have had some contact with club before war, but cannot trace any, but he did play with Whitehall Printers in the 1938-39 and 1939-40 seasons. He was injured in invasion of France, and was being repatriated, but his ship was sunk in the Channel. He died on 7th August 1944".(Information kindly supplied by Neil Roche). In the Leeds United programme of 9th September 1944 the following appeared. "Pte Maurice Lawn RECCE; I also have bad news about - This fine young man has died of wounds, age 22. - Maurice played twice for the first team last season at centre forward and scored the winning goal at Middlesbrough- Was an Ingram Road Schoolboy and joined us at the age of 15. Played as an amateur. " Lawn never played professionally in the Football League.
