A Scottish Amateur International, Kinghorn started his football career with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy before joining Pollok where he spent the 1934-35 and 1935-36 seasons. He then joined the famous Scottish Amateur team Queen's Park, where he gained Scotland Amateur International recognition, and in 1936-37, scored four times in thirteen League games and followed that up by netting nine times in thirty-eight League games in the following season of 1937-38. He also scored five goals in ten Scottish Cup games in the two seasons that he was there. He was signed by Liverpool in April 1938. He made his debut at Anfield in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea on 27th August 1938 at Outside Left. He played in Liverpool's forward-line during the last full season before the outbreak of the Second World War. The club had an extremely settled side at the time, with no fewer than ten players making at least thirty League appearances during that 1938-39 season. Kinghorn was the exception as he shared the No. 11 shirt for most of the season with Harman van den Berg. His first goal came at Anfield on 26th November 1938 when he got the only goal of the game against Blackpool after ten minutes. His final game for Liverpool, as it turned out, came at Anfield on 22nd April 1939 in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland in which he scored the Liverpool goal in the seventy-fifth minute. He finished up playing nineteen League games and scoring four goals in what turned out to be his only season in the Football League. Whennot playing for the first team, he scored six goals in five games for the Liverpool Reserves in 1938-39. As the War brought football League fixtures to a temporary end, he played in the War-time Leagues for Liverpool and guested for several other clubs. He played just once for Liverpool in 1939-40 and once again in 1940-41, but in 1944-45 he scored three goals in ten games. He played in two games for Leeds United as he guested for them in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) at Outside Left in two consecutive games against Gateshead. The first was at Gateshead in a 1-3 defeat on 12th September 1942 and the second was at Elland Road the following Saturday and they again lost, this time by 1-2. He also guested for Leicester City in 1939-40, when he scored once in two games, Brighton and Hove Albion where he played once in 1940-41, scored seven times in seventeen games in 1942-43 and played twice in 1943-44, while in 1941-42 he played once for Manchester City and twice for Newcastle United without scoring. In 1944-45 he played once for Blackburn Roversand scored six times in twelve games for Burnley. His contract ran out during the War Years and he did not play in the Football League after the War.
