James signed for his native South Shields before joining Second Division Bradford Park Avenue in August 1944. He did not make his League debut for Park Avenue until the 1949-50 season when he made just one appearance, as they finished bottom of the Second Division and were relegated to the Third Division North. He only played one more season with Bradford, scoring once in twelve League appearances in the 1950-51 season before retiring. He scored once in thirteen League games and played four F.A. Cup games while at Park Avenue. He did, however, make six appearances in 1944-45 and one more game in 1945-46 during the War years. He had made one appearance as a Wartime guest for Leeds United in the 1944-45 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) on 28th October 1944 when he played at Left Back in a 4-2 away win at Newcastle United. He died in 2003.
