Harston started with Ardsley Athletic and then signed for First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 1937 but did not make their senior team and moved to Barnsley in September 1938. The Second World War arrived and Harston still had not played a Football League game. He played for his home team and guested with several others during the War years. He made just one appearance for Barnsley in the 1939-40 season, followed by nine in 1940-41 and then became a regular, making twenty-one appearances in 1941-42, twenty-two in 1942-43, thirty-one in 1943-44, twenty-two in 1944-45 and eleven in 1945-46.He guested for Leeds United in the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section (First Championship) when he played two consecutive games against Halifax Town. He played both games and the home game finished in a 1-1 draw and the second at The Shay saw United go down 1-5. In 1941-42 he made six guest appearances for Doncaster Rovers and three for Chesterfield in 1942-43. He also guested with Bradford City with four games in 1942-43, eleven in 1944-45 and one in 1945-46. After the war he continued with Second Division Barnsley scoring one goal in twenty League appearances and making two F.A. Cup appearances before moving to Third Division North Bradford City in June 1949. He had just one season at Valley Parade but scopred once in twenty-four League and two F.A. Cup ties before dropping into Non-League football with Scarborough and then Denaby United before retiring, when he ran a newsagent shop. He died in 1997.
