Harper signed for Third Division South Walsall in March 1935 and scored once in seven League games as the Saddlers were forced to seek re-election in 1937-38. They suffered the same fate the following season as Harper career figures showed two goals from twenty-two League appearances as World War Two brought the Football League to a temporary end. After playing two games for Walsall in 1939-40, he returned to his native area to play for Barnsley as a War-time guest making sixteen appearances in the 1939-40 season. This was followed by twenty-seven appearances in 1940-41, thirty in 1941-42 and ten in 1942-43, when he also played three times for Walsall. It was during the 1944-45 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship) campaign that Harper made his only appearance for Leeds in a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday. He also played once for Walsall, twelve times for Barnsley, once for Blackpool in 1945-46, and, after signing for Bradford City in January 1946, he made thirteen appearances for them in that season. When the Football League resumed after World War Two Harper remained with Third Division North Bradford City and went on to play fifty League games for them before retiring in the 1948-49 season. He died in 1994.
