Denton was educated at Mirfield Free Grammar and joined the Leeds Academy when just seven years old. He made his way through the Junior teams and was accepted on a two year scholarship in the summer of 2012 along with ten others, which included Kalvin Phillips, Lewie Coyle and Alex Purver. He played in one game for the England Under-Seventeen side in 2011-12 and came on as a sixtieth minute subsitute, for Jordan Snodin in midfield, in a 6-0 away win at Sheffield United for the Leeds Under-Eighteen team on 15th October 2011. After being a seventieth minute substiute, again for Jordan Snodin in midfield, a fortnight later in a 4-0 home win over Newcastle United, he made his starting debut at left back in a 1-0 away win at Middlesbrough on 5th November 2011. He again came off the bench in a 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland, a week later, in the sixty-fifth minute and in the sixtieth minute in a 0-2 defeat in the F.A. Youth Cup at Portman Road on 8th December 2011, when he again replaced Jordan Snodin in midfield in those games. He started one game and came of the bench four times as his experience progressed. In the 2012-13 season he started in midfield in the 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on 25th August 2012 and in the 3-2 win at Wigan Athletic the following week. He started his third game of the season in a 2-1 away win over Sheffield Wednesday on 20th October 2012, but after he had been brought down in the box to earn a penalty from which Alex Mowatt gave United the lead, he was injured in the second half and had to be replaced by Luke Booker. He started in midfield in the 2-1 away win at Crewe Alexandra on 17th November 2012 but once more had to be replaced and Corey Roper took over. He made his debut for the Under-Twenty-One team as a substitute for Patrick Antelmi in a 1-2 away defeat at Birmingham City on 15th April 2013 and also came on as a substitute in 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on 25th April 2013 and in the final match four days later in a 0-1 home defeat by Huddersfield Town. The 2013-14 season saw him start in the Under Twenty- One side as a seventy-eighth minute substitute for striker Luke Parkin in the 1-2 defeat at Huddersfield Town on 26th August 2013. This was quickly followed by two Under-Eighteen starts on 31st August in a 0-3 home defeat by Nottingham Forest and a 3-3 draw at Crewe Alexandra a fortnight later. He then started the game at left-back for the Under-Twenty-Ones on 16th September in a 0-2 defeat at Birmingham City, but Lewie Coyle replaced him late in the game. He came on as a replacement for Luke Varney as the Under- Twenty-Ones were beaten 3-4 by Barnsley at Oakwell in the League Cup on 29th October. He had also established himself in midfield in the Under-Eighteens and went on to open his goal account in the 3-0 home win over Crewe Alexandra on 11th January 2014 but finished the season with one goal in nine starts for the Under-Eighteens and four starts and two games from the bench for the Under-Twenty-Ones as he spent most of the season injured. Despite that United showed their faith in the young prospect and in June 2014 he signed a contract for one more year. In 2014-15 he became a regular in the Under-Twenty-One team and started twenty-five and came on twice as a substitute as he made the left back position his own. He was again re-signed for a further year on 17th June 2015. In 2015-16 he was ever-present starting thirty-two games (30 in the League and 2 in the Cup) and on 27th June 2016 his contract was again extended for a further year. In the 2016-17 pre-season games, Denton was chosen for the squad that went on tour to Ireland. While he was cearly second choice to Charlie Taylor, there was plenty of talk of Taylor being up for sale if the right offer came along. He started in the first game, a 3-1 win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park on 13th July and played an hour before giving way to Charlie Taylor. Three days later, in a 3-0 win over Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium, the reverse was the situation as Charlie Taylor played the first hour before Denton played the final thirty minutes. He did not make the squad for the 1-2 loss at Peterborough United on 23rd July but did play a full game at left back for a strong Reserve side in a 4-3 win over Guiseley at Nethermoor the night before. In the final game of the pre-season in a 2-1 win over Atlanta at Elland Road on 30th July, Charlie Taylor played a full game at left-back, while Denton had to be content with a place on the bench, but remained unused. There was no place for Denton in the Leeds squad for the opening League game at Queens Park Rangers on 7th August 2016, but he was an unused substitute in the League Cup at Fleetwood Town three days later. The pattern continued as he did not make the squad in any League games, but was given his first-team debut in the League Cup on 23rd August 2016 at Luton Town. He took the chance with both hands and was the hero of the night as he scored the only goal of the game in the twenty-third minute with a curling volley from the edge of the box. Three days later he was given a further two years extension to his current contract which would keep him at the club until June 2019. He went on to play a full game in both F.A. Cup-ties, at Cambridge United on 9th January 2017 and at Sutton United on 29th of the same month. On 4th August 2017, Denton was given a new three year contract and a couple of days later he joined League Two side Port Vale on a season long loan, which had the option of a recall at the end of January 2018. Due to Family reasons he returned to Elland Road halfway through his intended loan period on 2nd January 2018. He had started twelve League games and been used as a substitute on three occasions. He had also started one and been a substitute twice in the F. A. Cup and similarly had started one and come off the bench twice in the Football League Trophy. After his return to Leeds he scored twice in six starts for the Under-Twenty-Three Professional Development League side. On 6th July 2018, he went on a season long loan to League One side Peterborough United. He made his debut for Posh in the League Cup defeat at Queens Park Rangers by 0-2 on 14th August 2018. He then played one game in the Football League Trophy as Posh drew 3-3 at MK Dons on 4th September 2018, but had yet to make a League appearance.
