Little is known about Alan Dempsey, other than he played with Portobello. He only played
three consecutive games for Leeds. They came in the 1940-41 Football League Northern Regional
League, when he played at Outside Left in a 2-2 draw with Halifax Town at The Shay. This was
followed by two games at Right Half at Elland Road when Bradford Park Avenue were beaten 2-1
and Chesterfield proved victorious 1-2. "He was from Portobello (near Edinburgh), but I have never
seen it said he played for a Portobello club. Have seen him described as Leeds United amateur,
normally a Wing-Half. He played a couple of times for Halifax Town in 1940-41, but have never
seen any other trace of him." (Information kindly supplied by Neil Roche). Further information, again
with kind thanks to Neil Roche, "indicates that an A.J. Dempsey of Leeds United guested with
Southampton in 1943-44 and played one game for them in 1944-45 and may have been a Southampton
player at that time and made further guest appearances, once with Portsmouth and once with Luton
Town in the same season. " It is not thought that Dempsey played professionally in the Football League.
