Brown was a late starter in League football, being twenty-four when Eddie Gray signed
him from Northern Counties East League side, Thackley, in March 1983. He failed to establish
himself and when Andy Linighan was signed he found himself out of the first team. He had a
loan spell with Doncaster Rovers in November 1984 before making the move permanent in March
1985. He became Rover’s skipper and was a consistent and reliable defender for them, being
voted "Player of the Year" in 1985-86, until he departed for Scunthorpe United in August 1987
for £10,000. While at Belle Vue he scored twice in eighty-seven League games, two of which
were as a substitute. Despite suffering injuries, he gave the Irons good service scoring twice
in fifty-four League games, eight of which were from the bench. His final move was to
Rochdale in August 1989, where he made one hundred and eleven starts and three as a
substitute without scoring, before retiring from League football in 1993. He later played
for Bradford Park Avenue and Managed Eccleshill United. After retiring he worked as Customer
Service Manager for Pennington Power Tools in Shipley and has been there over ten years.
