Locally born, he joined the Manchester United Academy in July 2003 and progressed through all the age groups as a Junior. He was capped by England as a Left Back at most age groups. He gained one cap at Under-Sixteen, as a Central Defender, when he played the full eighty minutes, in a 3-4 defeat by Germany at the Sudstadion, Cologne, on 13th February 2013. He gained four caps at Under-Seventeen, starting with a substitute appearance in a 1-2 defeat by Italy at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton-on-Trent when he replaced Max Lowe after nineteen minutes and played sixty-one of the eighty minutes on 1st September 2013. He went on to take his tally to four with three further games in which he played the full eighty minutes. He was at left back in all three, on 24th October 2013 at the Republican Stadium in Yerevan in a 4-0 win over Armenia, then two days later in an 8-0 win over Gibraltar at the same venue and finally on 30th January 2014 in a 1-2 defeat by Belgium at St George's Park, Burton-on-Trent. He was called up on five occasions to the England Under-Nineteen squad but on three of those occasions, he remained on the bench. However, he did play a full ninety minutes in Central Defence on his debut in a 2-2 draw with Netherlands at the Sportpark, Julianapark in Hoorn. He was again in Central Defence when he started in a UEFA Euro Group A1 Qualifier at the City Stadium Lepe, Spain on 26th March 2016 in a 1-1 draw with Greece, when he played sixty-seven minutes before being replaced by Lewis Cook. At England Under-Twenty level he was at Left Back in his only appearance, when he started at the Aggborough Stadium in Kidderminster in 4th September 2016 but was one of five Half-Time replacements when he gave way to Tafari Moore in a 1-2 defeat by Brazil. At Old Trafford, after signing professional forms in July 2013, he became elegant on the ball but a strong tackler, and could play in a couple of positions in the back four. He had also been tried in a holding role in midfield, but looked most at home as a left-footed centre-back or on the left side of defence. He had become highly thought of at the club and capped by England at schoolboy level. He was aged just sixteen when he made his Manchester United Under-Twenty-Ones debut, as an eighty-sixth minute replacement for Tom Lawrence at Bolton Wanderers on 16th September 2013. After helping keep things tight at the back for United's Under-Sixteens during the successful 2013 Milk Cup run, he scored two goals in the 2014 tournament as United retained the trophy in Northern Ireland, including the all-important winner in the final against Vendee. He pushed on during the 2014-15 season and was the leading appearance player for the Under-Eighteens with thirty-one. A regular in the defence, he added more to the attacking elements of his game but only scored once, the eventual winner in a 2-1 triumph against Blackburn Rovers. Progress was forthcoming in the following term as he played in the UEFA Youth League and for the Reserves, going from strength to strength in the words of the traing staff. His first start at the Under-Twenty-three level came at Left Back at Leicester City on 10th August 2015 and he played the full ninety minutes. By April 2018 he had started twenty-two games at that level and completed the vast majority of them, playing mostly at Left Back in the initial games but in 2018 he was used exclusively in Central Defence. On 9th February 2015 he played a full game at Left Back in the 1-3 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the FA Youth Cup. He was also at Left Back in the UEFA Youth League and played three full games the first in a 0-3 defeat by PSV Eindhoven on 15th September 2015, then a 1-1 home draw with VfL Wolfsburg on 30th September 2015 and in a 0-0 home draw with CSKA Moscow on 3rd November 2015. He was elevated to first team level in the 2015-16 season, making his debut at Left Back as a forty-third minute replacement for the injured Matteo Darmian and played the remaining forty-seven minutes, in the 2-3 loss to VfL Wolfsberg in a Group B tie in the UEFA Champions League, on 8th December 2015. His EPL debut came at Left Back on 7th November 2015 when Marcos Rojo was injured in the seventy- sixth minute of a 2-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion and he came on for the final fourteen minutes. He made his starting debut on 12th December 2015 at Bournemouth and played a full game at Left Back in a 1-2 defeat. There were a further four games in which he played the full ninety minutes at Left Back. On 2nd February 2016 in a 3-0 home win over Stoke City, five days later in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea, on 13th February 2016 in a 1-2 defeat by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and in the reverse fixture with Bournemouth at Old Trafford on 17th May 2016 in a 3-1 win. In addition he started in the 0-1 home defeat by Southampton in Left Midfield on 23rd January 2016 but was replaced in the eighty-sixth minute by Adnan Januzaj. He also came on as a substitute on four occasions. The first at Left Back in the 0-0 home draw with Chelsea on 28th December 2015 when he came on for twenty minutes when he replaced Matteo Darmian after seventy minutes. Secondly on 17th January 2016 at Left Back in the 1-0 win at Anfield over Liverpool when he replaced the injured Ashley Young after forty-two minutes to play the remaining forty-eight minutes, and finally, on 7th May 2016 in a 1-0 win at Carrow Road over Norwich City he replaced Matteo Darmian after 16mins and played the remaininf seventy-four minutes at Left Back. He also sat unused on the bench on six occasions, on 28th November 2015 in a 1-1 draw at Leicester City, in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford with West Ham United on 5th December 2015, in a 1-2 home loss to Norwich City on 19th December 2015, seven days later in a 2-0 win at Stoke City, then in a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United on 12th January 2016, and finally in a 2-3 loss at West Ham United on 10th May 2016. In the F.A. Cup he twice played a full game at Left Back. In the Third Round in a 1-0 home win over Sheffield United on 9th January 2016 and in the Fourth Round at Derby County on 29th January 2016 in a 3-1 victory. He also started at Left Back in the 3-0 win in the Fifth Round at Shrewsbury Town on 22nd February 2016, but he was replaced by Joe Riley at Half-Time. The 2015-16 was topped off when he received the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year trophy. In May 2016, he signed a new contract tying him to Old Trafford until 2020, with an option to extend it a further year. He was then sent to Championship outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan to gain some experience, and he acquitted himself well in making seven appearances, all at Left Back, in the first team. He sat on the bench unused in two games, in the 2-1 home win over Cambridge United on 23rd August 2016 in the League Cup, and four days later in a 0-1 loss at Huddersfield Town in the Championship before he made his debut and played a full game in the 1-1 home draw with Burton Albion on 10th September 2016 in the Championship. More full games followed in a 2-0 away win at Newcastle United on 17th September in the League and then, three days later, the scores were reversed in the League Cup at the same venue. It continued on 24th September as Brentford were defeated 3-1 at Molineux, but three days later he was on the bench as Wolves were beaten 2-1 at Wigan Athletic. He played eighty-seven minutes of the 1-2 home defeat by Norwich City on 1st October 2016 and then two more full games in a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, and in a 2-3 defeat by Derby County at Molineux. He made the bench for a 4-4 draw at home to Fulham on 10th December 2016, but that was his last contact with the first team and the rest of his loan was confined to two games with the Wolves Under-Twenty-three squad with eighty-two minutes in a 0-4 reversal to West Ham United at Molineux on 19th December 2016 and a full game on 15th February 2017 in a 1-1 home draw with Stoke City. He returned to Old Trafford at the end of the 2016-17 season, but had already returned before then by mutual agreement due to lack of games at Molineux and played with the United Under Twenty-Threes. He was loaned to Leeds United on 7th August 2017, but could never break into the Leeds team and his appearances were confined almost to the Cup competitions when regulars are rested. He made his debut on 9th August 2017 at Centre Back in the 4-1 League Cup win over Port Vale at Elland Road. This was followed by his only Championship appearance when he played in a 0-0 home draw with Preston North End on 12th August 2017, being replaced by Stuart Dallas in the eighty-second minute. On 22nd August there was another full game in the Second Round 5-1 win over Newport County at Elland Road. The Third Round on 19th September 2017 saw a trip to Turf Moor to play Burnley and after the sides were locked at 2-2 at full-time Leeds took the tie 7-5 after penalties, but Borthwick-Jackson had been replaced by Hadi Sacko after sixty minutes. There was a trip to Leicester in the Fourth Round, which saw Leeds defeated by 3-1 and once again he had been replaced, this time at Half-Time by Luke Ayling. His final appearance came in the F.A. Cup at Newport County by 1-2 on 7th January 2018 and once more he was replaced, this time on the hour by Liam Cooper. He then returned to Old Trafford on 16th January 2018, where he spent the rest of the season playing for the Under-Twenty-threes. He moved to Scunthorpe United on loan for the 2018-19 season on 28th July 2018.He had played full games in almost all of the games he had played and always at left back. He then played in the 1-2 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup three days later.
