in his only season with the Bloomfield Road club. He joined Second Division Barnsley
at the start of the1936-37 season and soon cemented a regular spot at Wing Half and,
after the club had been relegated in 1937-38, he was in their side that won the Third
Division North Championship in the following season. World War Two interrupted his
profession before he could resume his Second Division career. While at Oakwell he
scored four goals in eighty-eight League games and another one in five F.A. Cup
appearances. During the War period he made five guest appearances for Leeds United.
The first was the final game of 1942-43 Football League Northern Section playing Right
Half at Bradford Park Avenue, when United lost 2-5. The other four games came early
in the 1944-45 Football League Northern Section (Second Championship), when he played
at Right Half as Leeds faced York City on consecutive Saturdays in January 1945 and
won the game at Bootham Crescent by 5-0 and the game at Elland Road by 4-3. He played
in the 1-1 draw with Hull City at Anlaby Road two weeks later on 10th February 1945
and his final game was in the 0-2 loss to Bradford Park Avenue a fortnight later.
During the War he played mostly for Barnsley and never scored a goal in War-time
football, but turned out for his club twenty times in 1939-40, thirty-three games in
1940-41, twenty-nine in 1941-42 and again in 1942-43, twenty-one in 1943-44 and once
in 1945-46. He also played for Huddersfield Town , three times in 1941-42 and
Chesterfield once in the same season, while he also played for Bradford City once in
1942-43 and twice in 1943-44. He finished the War with Carlisle United, making
twenty-three appearances in 1945-46 and he signed for the Third Division North team
after the War but never played a League game for them. He finished his career in
Non-League with Gainsborough Trinity and then Grantham. He died in 1996.
