Croydon-born Jamal Blackman joined the Chelsea Academy as an Under-thirteen-year-old and then progressed through their Junior teams until he became an England Under-Nineteen International and a regular in the Chelsea Youth-Cup winning team of 2011-12, having also twice played for the England Under-Sixteens. In the 2010-11 season his name was twice on the Premier Reserve League teamsheet, playing a full ninety minutes in the 0-4 away defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-Twenty-Ones on 1st November 2010 and then in another 0-4 reversal at Manchester City Reserves on 5th May 2011 when he took over from Jan Sebek in the thirty-eighth minute with the score at 0-2. He also sat unused on the bench in ten further Reserve games. In 2011-12, he made nineteen youth team appearances and did sit unused on the bench for the first team as they went down 3-5 at Stamford Bridge to Arsenal. He started and played four full games for the Chelsea Reserves and also sat unused a further six times on the bench and he trained frequently with the first team keepers. He also took part in the first team's summer tour to the USA in the summer of 2012 being second choice behind Hilario in the 4-2 win over Seattle Sounders in the opening game at CenturyLink Field on 18th July 2012 but came on after half-time when the score was already 4-2. He was not in the squad for the 1-1 draw with Paris St Germaine at the Yankee Stadium on 22nd July 2012 as Petr Cech and Ross Turnbull were the first two choices and split the duties. On 25th July 2012, it was Hilario who started the game with Ross Turnbull taking over at half time as MLS All Stars won 3-2 at PPL Park, Chester, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 29th July 2012, AC Milan won 1-0 at the SunLife Stadium, Miami, Florida and Petr Cech played a full game. He first played for England at Under-Seventeen level making two appearances. Then he made his debut for the England Under-Nineteen in the 2-2 draw with France at the Stade Municipal, Toulouse in a Friendly International on 5th October 2011. Two days later he sat unused on the bench in a 1-0 win over Portugal, while Connor Ripley played a full game. Two days later, on 9th October 2011 at Stade Municipal de Beaublanc, Limoges, he started the game which England won 3-1 against Ukraine, but was rotated with Connor Ripley at half-time. His third cap came on 10th November 2011 in another friendly, this time in a 1-0 win over Denmark at the Amex Stadium, Brighton, when he replaced Connor Ripley in the fifty-ninth minute. On 9th September 2014 he was called up to the England Under-Twenty-One team and sat unused on the bench in a 3-0 away win over Moldova at Sheriff Tiraspol, in a UEFA European Under-Twenty-One Championship qualification game, but Jonathan Bond played the full game.He started eleven full games for the Chelsea Under-Twenty-Ones in the Premier League Two and a further ten in the Under-Twenty-One Premier League Qualifications Group One in the 2012-13 season and again worked closely with the first team goalkeepers. He was again involved with the club's pre-season tour to Asia and America prior to the 2013-14 season. On 17th July 2013 they defeated Singha All-Stars 1-0 at Rajamanagala National Stadium Bangkok. Petr Cech started but was replaced by Blackman at Half Time. On 21st July 2013, a Malaysia XI was defeated 4-1 at Shah Alam Stadium, Shah Alam, in a game in which Mark Schwarzer started and Petr Cech came on at Half-Time. In a thirs game in the Far East, on 25th July 2013, BNI Indonesia All-Stars were defeated by 8-1 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta. Blackman started in this game and was replaced by Schwarzer after forty-five minutes. The next game was a prelude to the International Champions Cup. It was played on 11th August 2013 and finished Chelsea 2 AS Roma 1 at RF Kennedy Stadium in Washington DC. Mark Schwarzer started and Blackman replaced him at Half Time. Blackman managed not to concede a goal during any game on the tour. In the International Champions Cup, he did not appear on any teamsheet as Petr Cech and Mark Schwarzer were the first two choices. On 1st August 2013, Inter Milan were defeated 2-0 as Oscar, in the thirteenth minute, and Hazard with a twenty-ninth minute penalty, saw Chelsea victorious at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, with Cech starting and Schwarzer the half-time replacement. They made the finals as they beat AC Milan in the semi-finals by two goals thanks to De Bruyne in the twnty-eighth minute and Schurrle in the final minute on 4th August 2013 at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, as Petr Chech, again started and Mark Schwarzer came on at half-time.However they were defeated in the Final by Real Madrid at the Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens on 7th August 2013by 3-1, with goals by Marcelo in the thirteenth and Ronaldo in the thirty-first and fifty-sixth, after Ramires had initially equalised for Chelsea adter sixteen minutes, with Petr Cech playing a full ninety minutes. The 2013-14 season saw him three times unused on the bench in the first team in the League Cup, in the 2-0 away win at Swindon Town on 24th September 2013, a 2-0 away win at Arsenal on 29th October 2013 and a 1-2 defeat at Sunderland, after extra- time on 17th December 2013. He did also play ten full games for the Chelsea Under-Twenty-One team in the Premier LeagueTwo and was also the first choice as Chelsea won the final of the knock-out stage by defeating Manchester City 6-5 on penalties, after exta-time, with Blackman making two decisive penalty saves, and beating Manchester United 2-1 in the Final. He signed a new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge in June 2014 and was called up to the England Under-21 squad for the first time later that summer. He then moved on loan to Middlesbrough until January 2015 . He had little chance to show his capabilities at the Riverside and he sat unused on the bench for seven consecutive Championship League games from 13th September until 18th October 2014. His only appearance for the first team came in the Third Round of the League Cup on 23rd September 2014, where his one appearance, The tie was at Anfield and it was a remarkable one. It ended with the joint highest-scoring penalty contest in English professional football. The score had finished at 1-1 in normal time and had then become deadlocked at 2-2 after extra-time. Patrick Bamford missed with the second penaty, but Blackman saved the ninth penalty from Raheem Sterling and so it became level at 4-4 on penalties after each had taken the permitted five. This progressed and after both goalkeepers had scored the sides were still locked at 9-9. It was not until Albert Adomah had failed to equalise that Liverpool eventually prevailed 14-13 on penalties, to win 16-15. With Mark Schwarzer leaving Chelsea at the start of January 2015, Blackman returned to be the third keeper in the first-team squad. He started two games with the Chelsea Under-Twenty-Ones and completed both, on 2nd March 2015 in a 0-2 defeat at Liverpool and on 23rd April 2015 in a 3-0 home win over Everton in the Premier League Two. He was also unused on the bench on 18th May 2015 as Chelsea lost 0-3 at West Bromwich Albion in the EPL. Chelsea signed the experienced Marco Amelia as cover when Thibaut Courtois was injured later in the 2015-16 season, and this meany that Blackman was allowed to leave on loan in March 2016. He joined Swedish top-flight side Ostersunds FK where he played a dozen games prior to the end of the loan period in May. Earlier in the season he had sat unused on the bench in five UEFA Champions League fixtures from September to November 2015. He had also sat unused on seven occasions in the EPL from August to November 2015, while in the League Cup he had similarly been unused on the bench in a 4-1 away win at Walsall on 23rd September 2015. He had also played three full games for the Chelsea Under-Twenty-Ones in Premier League Two, in a 4-0 home win over Liverpool on 8th November 2015, a 1-3 home defeat by Sunderland on 30th November 2015 and a 5-0 home win over Norwich City on 17th February 2016. In the Swedish Allsvenskan he made his debut for Ostersunds FK on 4th April 2016 in a 1-1 draw at Hammarby IF and went on to play a total of twelve full games before playing his final game in a1-4 home defeat by Malmo FF on 28th May 2016. In August 2016, he moved to League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on loan for the first half of the season and his good form helped them climb the table. The loan was extended to the end of the campaign on 1st January 2017 which meant Blackman was in goal for a dramatic FA Cup tie at Tottenham. He pulled off some notable saves and his side were going through 3-2 until the eighty-ninth minute but eventually lost in added time. He made fifty-two appearances for The Chairboys, and kept seventeen clean sheets, and picked up the club's Young Player of the Year award. He made his debut on 16th August 2016 in a 1-1 home draw with Accrington Stanley and like usual he played a full ninety minutes. He went on to start a total of forty-two games in League Two, six in the EFL Trophy, in which they reached the semi-finals, and four F.A. Cup ties. He played his final game for them on 6th May 2017 in a 1-0 home win over Cambridge United as Wycombe finished ninth in League Two. In July 2017, it was announced that Blackman would be be continuing his development on loan at Championship side Sheffield United, and he also signed a new contract at Chelsea until 2021. He made his Championship League debut when he started in the forst game of the season on 5th August 2017 in a 1-0 home win over Brentford. He went on to start a total of thirty-one League games and also sat unused on the bench, in the League, on seven occasions. He played full games in all of those games with three exceptions. They were on 31st October 2017, in a 0-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road, when he collided with team-mate Cameron Carter-Vickers while trying to gather a high ball. The collision, in the tenth minute left Blackman with head injuries which saw him play no further part in the game. It also meant that Idrissa Sylla was able to sweep the loose ball into the empty net for the only goal of the game and Simon Moore had to replace Blackman after just ten minutes and the Chelsea man missed the next game as he recovered from his injuries. On 27th February 2018, in the 3-1 win in the away game with Reading, he was again injured and had to be replaced by Simon Moore after just thirty-four minutes. Again he missed subsequent games. On 30th March 2018 in the 1-1 draw at Griffin Park against Brentford, he was sent from the field in the sixty-ninth minute for Violent Conduct and was suspended for three games as a result. Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was reluctant to focus on the double sending-off of Brentford midfielder Ryan Woods and his goalkeeper Jamal Blackman after the sides fought out a fiery draw. The pair both saw red for tussling over the ball in the back of the net after Chris Mepham’s debut goal for the Bees had cancelled out Chris Basham’s opener. Wilder said: “I’m not really sure what he was thinking about dealing with a 6ft 7ins lad. Jamal doesn’t have to hand the ball back. Woods has a slap and Jamal retaliated and made it easy for the ref." was how it was reported by the Blades' manager in the newspapers. In other games he was twice on the bench and unused in the League Cup and started two F.A. Cup ties, playing full games in both. Overall, he impressed in an eventful season at Bramall Lane as the Blades narrowly missed out on a play-off spot, keeping nine clean sheets in a total of thirty-three appearances. On 16th July 2018, he became the second loan signing by Leeds United of a Chelsea player as he joined Lewis Baker on loan for the season. He was later joined by former teammates, Patrick Bamford and Izzy Brown. He seemed destined to play deputy to Bailey Peacock-Farrell as the Nothern Ireland international was given the #1 jersey, while Blackman had to be content with #27, and so it seemed as he was on the bench in each of the Championship League games and, after making his starting debut in the League Cup 2-1 home win over Bolton Wanderers on 14th August 2018 and, a fortnight later repeated the feat in a 0-2 home defeat by Preston North End, playing a full game on each occasion. On 16th November 2018, in an Under-Twenty-Three Development team fixture at Thorp Arch, which also saw Izzy Brown finally play for Leeds, Jamal Blackman suffered a broken right tibia in a collision with Birmingham City's Beryly Lubala.and was rushed to Leeds Infirmary for the emergency. It was later announced that he would be returning to Stamford Bridge where he would have medical supervision to aid his recovery and rehabilitation. He had been so close to making his debut for Leeds, with doubts being cast over recent performances by the incumbent, but it was the end of his loan to Leeds.
