Atkinson started at Blackpool before joining United in May 1924, not having played for his hometown in any League games. Bill Norman was the Leeds Assistant Manager and had been his boss at Blackpool. He was Jim Baker and Willis Edwards’ understudy and found it hard to cement a spot, especially with George Reed also in contention. He left for Second Division Barnsley in July 1928 where he made sixty-three League appearances and scored twice and also made two F.A. Cup appearances. He then moved on to Third Division North side, Chester City, in June 1930 for £250 and made seven League appearances before disappearing into Non-League football with Fleetwood. He died in Manchester in 1983.
