Argue started with St Roch’s in his native Glasgow and joined First Division
Birmingham City in December 1931. He stayed there for two years, but failed to warrant a
place in the first team and departed for Chelsea in May 1933 before having made his Football
League debut. His first League game came in the 1933-34 season but it was his only
appearance that season. He broke into the Chelsea’s team and played on a regular basis until
World War Two brought a halt to Football League fixtures. By that time he had amassed one
hundred and seventeen League appearances and scored twenty-nine goals. He had also played
seven F.A. Cup games and scored five goals in that competition. During the war he made guest
appearances and between February and April 1943 he turned out four times for Leeds. He was
at Centre-Forward on his debut but switched to Inside-Right the following weekend for the
home game with Middlesbrough. He came back later for the two final games against Bradford
Park Avenue at Inside-Left as they won 2-0 at Elland Road but the following weekend for the
away fixture he had the number nine on his back and got his only goal as United went down
2-5. He did play once for Chelsea in the 1939-40 and four times in the 1945-46 season when
he scored once, but otherwise he did not play in England during the Second World War. He
returned to Chelsea after the cessation of hostilities and made one further appearance on
7th September 1946 at Anfield as Chelsea went down to Liverpool 4-7, with Argue getting one
of the Chelsea goals, before going into Non-League with Shrewsbury Town. He died in August
1978.
