He is the younger brother of Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi. Of Nigerian descent, he followed his older brother through the junior ranks of Newcastle United, but was allowed to leave to join the Leeds United Academy. He was included in the Leeds first team squad in the 2007-08. He had previously played for the club's reserve side, which had finished sixth in the Division One Central of the Pontin's Holidays League in 2006-07. He signed his first professional contract with Leeds on 8th August 2006. He had been offered the contract on 8th May 2006 but had to wait three months to sign the deal as the club had been placed under a transfer embargo, due to its financial situation. He made his first appearance of the pre-season in Leeds' 2-0 defeat against the Unibond League side Guiseley on 6th August 2006. He started the match, which was the club's final pre-season fixture, but was replaced after seventy-five minutes. Ameobi made his debut for Leeds on 28th August 2007 against Portsmouth in the Carling Cup and later came on as a seventy-eighth minute substitute at Darlington in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy encounter. He was loaned out to the CCCL side Scunthorpe United on 15th November 2007, to gain first team experience, and made ten substitute appearances, nine in the League and one in the FA Cup. After the loan period he returned to Leeds and was given a free transfer to Doncaster Rovers 23rd July 2008, who in turn loaned him to Grimsby Town on 23rd September 2008. He made two starts in the League and one substitute appearance in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy while at Blundell Park, without scoring, but returned at the end of December 2008. He was loaned to Mansfield Town on 16th January 2009 and, after one start and three substitute appearances in the League, he returned at the end of the season. His contract was not renewed by Doncaster and he left on 1st July 2009 after making just one substitute appearance. He joined Forest Green the same day and stayed until the end of the 2009-2010 scoring four goals in twenty-seven League games, two of which were from the bench and made three more appearances in the F.A. Cup. He joined Whitley Bay, after a short trial, in July 2010 and played in their pre-season friendlies, mostly as a substitute but only made four appearances, all as a substitute. He joined Second Tier Icelandic club BI/Bolungarvík and played his first game on 14th May 2011. He had scored seven goals in twelve appearances by the end of the season.
