After starting with his local club, Morley, he signed for Second Division Leeds City in October 1914. Wainwright was described by ‘Athletic News” as being a fearless local lad and he came out of his debut against crack side Arsenal, as a replacement for Irish Left Half Mick Foley with distinction. Foley was re-instated for the following game and Wainwright had to wait until late November for the game with Bury at Gigg Lane before standing in once more for Foley for his second and final game for City.
