Trotter started with Jarrow Croft and Ashington in his native North East. He guested for
Leeds City and played three times for them in 1916-17 season. He was at Outside Left in his
debut on Christmas Day at home to Bradford City. He was at Inside Left and got the Leeds
goal in a 1-1 draw at Leeds Road against Huddersfield Town on 6th January 1917 and was at
Inside Right for his third and final game against Hull City at Elland Road on 10th February
1917. He signed for Second Division Leicester City in 1920 and played ninety-six League
games, in scoring ten goals and also scored once in four F.A. Cup matches. He moved to
Second Division South Shields in 1924, playing one hundred and twenty League games which
yielded fifteen goals and nine F.A. Cup ties in which he scored twice. He finished his
Football League career with Second Division Port Vale, who he joined in 1927. He scored
three times in sixteen League appearances and also had one F.A. Cup game without scoring. He
then moved into Non-League Football with Manchester Central before returning to his native
North East to finish his career with Bedlington United.
